The Dolphin Reef’s declaration of intent includes three values:
Environment, society, and economics.
To bring humans closer to the environment through personal example of showing respect for our marine and land surroundings . To operate under a resolute aspiration to develop a utopian relationship with the animals, interaction founded on unconditional mutual respect. To be a scientific and research spearhead on the subject of dolphins and the environment.
As an organization that is sensitive to the human environment surrounding it, to make our social contribution through a personal example of giving opportunities and respect to the visiting public, free of prejudice.
To maintain an organization founded on economic independence in which the environmental and social messages are an inseparable part of its economic strategy. An organization which brings financial profit to its employees, managers, and owners.
The uniqueness of the conception as it was defined upon the establishment of the Dolphin Reef in 1990:
The dolphins will live in their natural environment, the sea, with minimal intervention in their lifestyle.
Our mission will be to ensure their quality of life by creating a suitable environment for providing them a good life comparable to their life in the wild.
We will intervene in their lifestyle only if there should be a danger to their existence or if one of the above conditions should not be upheld.
We will provide for their needs unconditionally.
When the time comes, the gate to the open sea will be opened and the dolphins will choose whether to remain within the site or to head off for the open sea.
Human - dolphin interaction
“We believe that in order to develop, enjoy, and maintain a relationship over the long-term, we must bring about a human - dolphin encounter that is based unreservedly on mutual willingness and is unconditional, in other words, an encounter in which we and the dolphins are focussed on each other and see the encounter as an objective in its own right and not as a means for achieving some other objective.”
“A person arriving for an encounter with a dolphin while giving respect, consideration, sensitivity, and free of the desire to obtain anything beyond the encounter itself, will get the most out of the encounter - feelings of warmth, strength, serenity, and joy.”
“In order for the dolphin to also get the most out of the encounter, he too must focus on the person himself and not on the person as a means of obtaining some other objective.”
“The responsibility for such a tension-free encounter lies with us, the humans, since as long as we can control the dolphin’s primary needs (provision of food, controlling its’ habitat area, intervening in its’ social life and more...) the dolphin can “only” offer itself and his friendship."
“If we want to meet dolphins “free” from any expectations from us, we shuld avoid taking advantage of the ability to control them and to implement one of the next alternatives:
Providing the needs we are able to provide, unconditionally and without any connection to the interaction, or not providing them completely, through which we create within the dolphin an expectancy to receive this from us (and they see to it that they receive it themselves).”
“We believe that the preferred way for an optimal relationship is integrating these two methods, while the tendency needs to always be: to minimize our interference and in the case when our intervention is essential – to provide them with their essentials unconditionally”.
