Supportive Experience

Human-Dolphin Connection

The dolphins at the reef live in their natural environment, enjoying their rich social lives. The human-dolphin connection at the Dolphin Reef is built upon the dolphins' own initiative. These interactions occur in the sea without any conditions of "give and take" or feeding. There is a mutual respect between humans and dolphins, where we, the people, are guests in the dolphins' home—the sea.

About the Program

The "Supportive Experience with Dolphins" program was established in 1991 by Sophie Donio, a psychotherapist who continues to lead it to this day. The program primarily serves children, with the most suitable age range being 6 to 16 years old.
Children participating in the program often face emotional challenges or conditions such as Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, behavioral issues, sexual abuse trauma, anxiety, intellectual disabilities, and more.

The program is both personal and family-oriented, with parents being fully involved and receiving guidance as well. The primary goal is to bring a smile to the child's face, foster feelings of success and capability, and provide emotional support to enhance the family’s quality of life.

This is a long-term program where children attend for a period of six months to a year, from Monday to Friday during most of the year, excluding August. To accommodate participants, children from Eilat and nearby areas attend weekly, while children from across the country visit for four consecutive days once a month.

Activities

Children interact with dolphins either from the floating pier or by swimming in the sea, accompanied by a personal trainer, while their parents enjoy the relaxing beach atmosphere. These encounters touch the participants emotionally, bringing joy, freedom, and heartfelt connections.

The dolphin's ability to choose to approach the swimming child creates an authentic bond. This profound experience makes the children feel loved, brings smiles to their faces, and uplifts their spirits. They are free to express themselves, which significantly contributes to their well-being.

These interactions enhance their motivation, allowing them to achieve tasks such as holding objects or learning to read—things they previously hesitated or refused to do. As a result, their focus and concentration improve, they become calmer, and their communication skills develop. Experiencing success boosts their self-esteem and confidence.

It is important to note that the program does not aim to cure or heal but rather to provide emotional support.
